After the death ofJ. Burton Caldwell, president of the First National Bank, bank examiners find three-quarters of a billion dollars missing. It is one ofthe biggest failures in the history of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Caldwell lived frugally, contributing to local charities and founding a Museum of Fakes and Frauds. When the FDIC attempts to recoup losses by auctioning the museum's holdings, the museum curator vanishes and suspicious accidents befall successful auction bidders. Failure analyst Owen Allison soon finds himself the target of a mysterious series of attacks.
