As a child, Kay Lansing witnesses a quarrel in an old hidden chapel on the grounds of the Carrington family estate. Years later, after a whirlwind courtship, Kay is married to the Carrington's son, Peter, despite the shadow of suspicion that hangs over Peter regarding the death two decades earlier of Susan Althorp, the 19-year-old daughter of his parent's neighbours, and the drowning of his first wife four years before. The subsequent discovery of two bodies buried on the estate causes Kay to question her husband's innocence. Kay believes that the key to the truth about her husband's guilt or innocence lies in the scene she witnessed in that chapel as a child.
