Ground

Catherine Aird
Losing Ground

The dramatic theft of an 18th-century painting is discovered just moments before the old manor house - uniquely depicted in the background of the portrait - goes up in flames. Coincidence? The stolen portrait, painted by a renowned local artist, portrays the Baronet of Tolmie Park alongside crabs and lobsters. Does the reputation of the Baronet as a hell-raiser and member of the Crustacean club have any connection to the fire? Events become decidedly more complex as a grisly spectacle is sighted in the blazing inferno moments before the roof collapses. Detective Inspector Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby are soon on the case.

Goodnight Sweetheart

Before the Second World War breaks, Chevrons, the idyllic country house where the Garlands have lived for centuries, has already been touched by events in Europe. To the horror of her family, Katherine, the eldest daughter, has run off to join the Nazis. On the outbreak of war, Caro, her younger sister, her friend Robyn, and the maids, Trixie and Betty, leave Chevrons to help the war effort. All the girls meet and fall in love with a succession of young men, most of whom, it seems to them, are fated to die young. Even Walter, the witty, handsome war artist, is soon to be touched by the hand of death. In such an atmosphere of fleeting pleasure and fatal acceptance, it would seem that the young will never find lasting happiness.

But then she makes a critical mistake. Suddenly, her career is in shambles, her credibility is questioned and her teenage daughter makes her realise just how much time she hasn't spent with her. The repercussions of ambitious reporting have now derailed the career of KEY News justice correspondent Cassie Sheridan. Cassie is transferred to Miami to wait out the end of her contract - separated from her family, her friends and the familiarity of Washington. But in an unsuspecting Florida town, a killer is watching. And waiting....
